Jim Shepard on Empathic, Imaginative Storytelling (or Not)

Here Jim Shepard talks about his interest in telling stories about characters who have not been a part of his experience. He discusses writing as an empathic way of attending to and imagining other people and thus learning more about ourselves. My questions are: when is a good time for a writer to learn this kind of storytelling or begin to use it? and does Jim Shepard think it’s true that this kind of storytelling would actually be the only way certain traumatic experiences can have a narrative?
