NO-SHOW

Tolstoy invited some guests over, officers (the commander-in-chief could have been among them), everyone, even the regimental doctor, and ordered a suckling pig prepared. No one came. Tolstoy found himself in the same situation as Charlie Chaplin, who had organized an evening and invited women. No one came. He ate very little, but he danced, imagining himself and the woman as two buns on forks. The forks made the buns dance. It’s as if Charlie Chaplin doesn’t feel his own poverty, his déclassé position. -Viktor Shklovsky
